61 Dems vote against House resolution condemning violence on police

The House passed a resolution Friday condemning violence against law enforcement and calling for defunding the police, with 61 Democrats voting against the bill.

All Republicans voted in favor of the bill, which passed 337-61, with 134 Democrats voting yes.

The resolution indirectly cited the summer 2020 protests, claiming that since then “the rule of law and respect for law enforcement authorities have declined.”

The group appears to be pursuing progressive policies that critics decry as anti-crime measures, noting that “policies implemented in several states and localities have enabled law enforcement to do their jobs effectively and safely. Democratic critics dismiss the bill as partisan and say it doesn’t actually improve conditions for police officers.

“We want to salute the police, because every community needs them… But even they recognize the bad apples over time… They have to be isolated. The police cannot police themselves. Because it matters,” said Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Maryland, during debate on the resolution, referring to the January 2023 police killing of Tire Nichols.

This comes after the FBI released new statistics this week showing that assaults against law enforcement hit a 10-year high in 2023, with 79,000 assaults recorded.
