Charges Filed Against Teacher for Sexual Abuse of Student
A 62-year-old physical education teacher and dean in a small town in Washington state faces charges of sexually abusing a female student over nearly two years, beginning when she was just 13. Most of these incidents reportedly occurred on school grounds.
King County prosecutors have formally charged Daniel Bouvard with multiple counts, including second- and third-degree rape of a child, as well as communicating with a child for immoral purposes. His work was at the Skyomish School District, situated in the scenic Cascade Mountains, roughly 90 miles east of Seattle.
This situation has sent shockwaves through the tiny community of Skykomish, which has fewer than 200 residents. In response, the school district decided to suspend classes until Monday while officials addressed what prosecutors have described as a “shocking abuse of power.”
Federal records indicate that the school serves a mere 52 students from kindergarten through 12th grade with just 10 teachers.
Interestingly, alongside his teaching role, Bouvard held the position of the district’s Title IX coordinator, a role intended to prevent and investigate sexual harassment within the school.
Prosecutors allege that he groomed the girl by giving her gifts and manipulating her emotions, ultimately leading to numerous sexual encounters at school.
According to reports, the girl transferred to the school during seventh grade after suffering the loss of a friend and formed a connection with Bouvard over a mutual interest in soccer. Allegedly, he provided her with special treatment and presents before they became involved sexually during her eighth-grade year. The abuse included sexual acts in various school locations, including a closet and a gym, taking place during school hours.
He is also accused of giving her alcohol and purchasing sexually suggestive gifts like lingerie and other items.
The school district revealed that they first learned of the charges when sheriff’s deputies arrested Bouvard in front of students last week.
Though initially denying any inappropriate contact, he later confessed to the offenses. During questioning, he reportedly admitted guilt, stating it was entirely his fault.
Documents include Bouvard expressing distress over the consequences of his actions, sharing feelings of worthlessness and a desire to be taken to jail rather than face his family.
The case first emerged in early March, when the girl’s mother found explicit materials on her phone and alerted authorities about her daughter’s relationship with the teacher.
In light of the incident, the district expressed its regret to parents, acknowledging the hurt and anger felt by the community. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of students moving forward.
Research over the past two decades indicates that sexual misconduct by educators remains a significant issue across the United States, with most cases involving male perpetrators targeting female students.
Bouvard now faces serious charges as a sexual predator, which, if convicted, could lead to a minimum of 25 years in prison.
He is currently held at King County Jail on a bond set at $750,000, with his arraignment scheduled for Monday.
