64 Illegal Boat Migrants Rescued After Capsizing Off Tunisian Coast

TUNIS, TUNISA (AP) – Tunisian authorities say 64 migrants have been rescued from a boat that overturned the country's eastern Mediterranean coast after they run out of fuel.

The country's national customs office said in a statement that the maritime patrol had been sent to the capsized ship. No deaths have been reported.

“The rescued migrants were trying to illegally cross the streets by boat by boat towards space in Europe,” the customs agency said.

The initial findings of the survey suggest that migrants departed from neighboring countries that are likely to be Libya.

The migrants were taken to Chebba Port 37 miles (60 km) north of SFAX for further investigation.

According to UNHCR, more than 30,000 migrants have sailed from Libya and arrived in Italy in 2024. The UN Refugee Agency said 61% of those who arrived in Italy by sea came from Libya, followed by 32% from Tunisia.

The United Nations Immigration Agency estimates that more than 100 migrants have died or disappeared in the central Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Tunisia and Libya since the beginning of 2025. There is no official data on the actual number of immigrants living in Libya.
