Standoff with Mentally Ill Woman Shuts Down Texas Highway

Authorities report that a woman with mental health issues caused a lengthy standoff with police after exiting her vehicle on a busy Texas highway, armed with a gun. The incident took place on Thursday when the 64-year-old woman struck a tractor-trailer deliberately on Interstate 45 in Spring.

Following the collision, she got out of her car and sat down in the southbound lane, clutching a .38 revolver.

“She held it against her face, throat, and head, which made it incredibly challenging for us to approach her and disarm her,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated during a press briefing.

The situation was sensitive due to the woman’s mental health history, which contributed to her unpredictable behavior. “There’s really no rational explanation for what unfolded, considering her issues,” the sheriff noted.

A five-hour standoff ensued, leading to the closure of both sides of the highway and creating significant traffic backups as officers attempted to communicate with her. She sat calmly in a folding chair, dressed entirely in blue.

Crisis negotiators were summoned, and eventually, the woman’s daughter arrived to assist in resolving the situation. “We allowed her to speak with her daughter, reinforcing that she was safe,” Gonzalez explained. The woman, whose identity hasn’t been shared, was in a fragile state during the event.

After hours of negotiation, she ultimately surrendered without any injuries reported, thanks in part to the presence of her daughter. She was subsequently taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The truck driver involved in the initial incident was unharmed. Gonzalez described the outcome as a “victory for everyone,” noting, “Someone’s mother, grandmother, is going home tonight. Well, not just yet, but she’ll receive the help she needs, and that’s a win for all.”
