The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said the quake was recorded at a depth of about 32 miles.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that the quake struck at 8:10pm UK time, about 50 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city with an estimated population of more than 150,000.

The earthquake posed a tsunami risk, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center.

The tsunami warning said waves “0.3 to 1 metre” higher than tide levels were possible only in certain coastal areas of Russia.

It also said a potential tsunami or powerful waves were likely to occur between 8.30pm and 9pm UK time.

However, the USGS noted that any impact to the potential for liquefaction or landslides would likely be minimal.

It also predicted that the likelihood of earthquake-related fatalities was “low.”

The US government agency added that the quake was felt more than 62 miles away from the epicenter.
