A 7-year-old girl in Wyoming faced an empty birthday celebration when all her friends canceled last minute. However, an unexpected turn of events brought strangers to her aid.
Chloe Branden found herself at a pizzeria in Cody, Wyoming, last weekend, festively decorated with birthday cheer but without any guests. In a moment of desperation, her mother, Melanie O’Donnell, reached out for assistance on a local Facebook group.
“She’s still making friends, so I really wanted her day to be special,” O’Donnell mentioned, according to Cowboy State Daily.
The family had initially planned an outdoor party but switched to the pizzeria due to the heat. Unfortunately, even after the location change, guests declined to join in.
“We took down the decorations, bought a big cake, and ended up just sitting in the arcade area,” O’Donnell recounted.
O’Donnell, who relocated to Cody earlier in the year, asked local parents if anyone could drop by to celebrate with Chloe.
Almost immediately, over 150 people responded to her Facebook post, and around 15 families arrived at the pizza place, bringing gifts for Chloe.
Chloe has a developmental disability that complicates her ability to make friends, as noted in the reports.
“The people who showed up were total strangers, yet they acted like old friends,” O’Donnell shared.
“The kids were incredibly kind and well-mannered. Chloe really enjoyed herself.”
Additionally, a man from Montana sent $25 via Venmo to ensure Chloe could receive another gift.
After losing her mother and grandmother, O’Donnell’s family made the move to Cody.
Post-party, O’Donnell reflected on the day in a Facebook message, mentioning the birthdays of her late family members.
“Many birthdays to celebrate this week. Mom would have been 2 years in heaven. You were set to retire this year. Chloe’s 7th birthday feels especially meaningful. Grandma Decker celebrated her 1st birthday up there,” she wrote.
“All these incredible women shape who I am and the young woman my daughter is becoming. I draw my strength from them.”
Later, Wyoming State Senator Cynthia Lummis shared the heartwarming story on X, expressing joy over the community’s response. “So happy to see Cody rally around Chloe and help make her 7th birthday so memorable. Happy Birthday, Chloe!!”
