Military Personnel Deployed to Los Angeles Amid Protests

On May 29, 2025, the US Northern Command announced plans to deploy hundreds of Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, alongside approximately 2,100 National Guard troops to Los Angeles. Their primary role will be to protect federal property and personnel amid ongoing protests.

The statement from the Combatant Command highlighted that these Marines would seamlessly integrate with Title 10 Units under Task Force 51, focusing on safeguarding federal assets in the area. The military emphasized that this initiative aims to ensure sufficient coverage for operations supporting the Lead Federal Agency.

Reports indicate that this deployment is a response to escalating incidents related to anti-ICE riots, with around 700 Marines expected to assist local law enforcement. The military further stated that this move is part of an effort to bolster support for federal operations in Los Angeles.

Task Force 51 is under the command of Major General Scott Sherman, who serves as the deputy commander of the Northern US Army.

This decision follows a previous announcement from President Donald Trump regarding the deployment of the National Guard to the same region. Interestingly, both Mayor Karen Bus and Governor Gavin Newsom objected to this federal presence, expressing concerns about its necessity and clarity.

At this point, it’s uncertain when the Marines will officially arrive in the area.
