71 percent of Americans worry officials won't accept election results: poll

A new poll highlights concern among Americans about whether authorities will accept the results of the November election.

of Scripps News/Ipsos Poll The survey found that 71 percent of respondents nationwide said they were very or somewhat concerned that authorities would not accept the election results.

The poll also found that 69% of Americans are concerned about foreign interference in our elections, 51% are concerned about foreigners voting illegally, and 50% are concerned about widespread voter fraud.

In his only presidential debate, with Vice President Harris, Trump again tried to sow doubt about the results of the 2020 election.

“There's plenty of evidence,” he said last week. “You just have to look at it.”

Several lawsuits challenging the results have been dismissed, and even some of Trump's former allies have acknowledged the election was not stolen. Trump and his allies have been charged in Georgia in connection with an alleged scheme to illegally influence the election outcome.

“Donald Trump has been fired by 81 million Americans,” Harris said during the debate. “I want to be very clear about that. Obviously Mr. Trump is having a very hard time accepting that fact.”

The debate, which was watched by more than 67 million people, is likely to be the only time Trump and Harris debate each other before Election Day as states begin early voting. Trump has said he will not take part in any more debates.

President Trump and his Republican allies have also expressed concern about undocumented immigrants casting illegal votes in the upcoming election and have frequently focused on immigration and the border during their campaigns.

House Republican leaders are pushing for language in government spending measures to make it illegal for foreign nationals to vote in federal elections, and President Trump has said Congress should not pass a stopgap budget bill without considering the “integrity of elections.”

Democrats point out that it is already illegal for foreigners to vote and such cases are extremely rare.

“People should never think about an election being rigged,” Trump said at the debate, arguing that instances of foreign voting and other voter fraud were cause for concern.

According to an Ipsos poll, 82% of Republican voters are concerned about non-US citizens voting in the next election.

of Scripps News/Ipsos Poll The survey was conducted Sept. 13-15 based on a nationally representative probability sample of 1,027 adults ages 18 and older. The margin of error is 3.6 percentage points.
