The 76ers are reportedly considering trading their third overall pick, eyeing names like Kevin Durant and Lauri Markkanen as potential targets.
There’s a sentiment among teams that the 76ers will engage actively in trade discussions, possibly including Paul George along with his valuable first-round selection. This information comes from ESPN.
Such moves, however, seem to contradict the basketball vision that Daryl Morey, the president of the 76ers, has articulated repeatedly.
This contradiction was also evident during a recent appearance on NBC Sports Philadelphia’s “Take Af” podcast where Morey expressed his plans. He stated, “Our plan is to choose this pick. I mean, you could argue about the top three, but there are solid players available in this draft.”
Morey appeared quite optimistic about the potential impact of a player that the 76ers could draft at that position.
In his initial mock draft, Zach Braziler from the Post projected that Rutgers’ Dylan Harper could end up with the 76ers, while another teammate, Ace Bailey, was also linked to Philadelphia in ESPN’s latest draft projections.
“The third pick historically has a strong chance of turning into an All-Star player,” Morey noted. “It’s not without risk, but this draft has a lot of potential franchise players.”
The ESPN report highlighted Morey’s tendency to be proactive about trades, while also pointing out that trading within the top three picks is quite uncommon.
With the NBA Draft more than a month away, possibilities remain open for the 76ers, whether they stick with the third pick or explore options to boost their competitiveness for the 2025-26 season.
Last season, Philadelphia struggled with a record of 24-58, hampered by injuries.
