8 in 10 Democrats say party should nominate Harris: Poll

A new poll finds that party members have rapidly rallied behind VP Harris since President Biden dropped out of the race, with a majority of Democrats saying the party should nominate her as its presidential candidate.

CBS News/YouGov Poll, Released on Monday, The survey found that 79 percent of Democrats support Harris as the top pick for president in 2024, while 21 percent said someone else should be the nominee.

The poll came shortly after Biden announced he was dropping out of the race after weeks of calls from some Democrats for him to step down amid concerns about whether he could serve another four years in office and beat former President Trump in November. Biden then endorsed Harris to run in his place, and many on the left quickly rallied to her candidacy.

Harris took her first step towards winning the Democratic presidential nomination, securing the endorsement of more than 1,968 delegates just two days after Biden dropped out of the race.

The survey found that about 83% of Democratic supporters support Biden dropping the election, while only 17% oppose it.

The poll found that about 45% of party members said Biden’s chances of beating Trump would be “more likely” if he didn’t run, while 10% said it would be “less likely,” while 17% said it would be the same and 28% said it depended on the candidate.

The survey also suggests Biden’s decision to step down may encourage more voters to go to the polls in November, with 39% of Democrats saying his withdrawal from the presidential race made them more motivated to vote, while about 49% said their motivation remained the same and 6% said it made them less motivated.

The CBS News/YouGov poll was conducted July 21-22 among 1,071 registered Democratic voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
