Heroic Act by 8-Year-Old Girl Saves Sisters from Dog Attack
An 8-year-old girl in California sustained serious injuries during a vicious encounter with a neglected pit bull, potentially saving her two younger sisters from a worse outcome.
Arlene Anguiano was outside her home in East Bakersfield while her mother prepared dinner. Arlene and her sisters, aged 6 and 2, were giving water to a dog when a pit bull approached them, as reported on Tuesday.
Suddenly, the pit bull lunged at them. Thankfully, Arlene acted quickly to protect her sisters.
“The dog wanted to bite my sisters, but I got in the way,” she recounted.
As the dog attacked her, she shouted for her sisters to keep their distance. In a moment of bravery, Arlene confronted the dog, striking it in the jaw.
At that moment, her mother, Daisy Gomez, rushed outside to assist.
“I ran out, jumped on top of the dog, and grabbed its hair. It bit one of my fingers and pulled, and I screamed,” Gomez recalled.
Remarkably, the dog ceased its attack.
Incidents involving pit bulls leading to severe injuries and deaths have been reported across the U.S. Such cases raise concerns about the breed’s behavior.
At the hospital, Arlene needed 40 staples in her head, three stitches in her hand, and treatment for various bruises and scrapes after being dragged by the dog, according to the ABC affiliate.
Gomez mentioned that aggressive dogs have been a persistent issue in their area, with little being done to address it.
Animal control officials reported that the pit bull was not a stray but had been left with relatives after its owner moved away. The dog escaped due to an open gate.
The agency confirmed, “The dog is currently not in the custody of Kern County Animal Services, and a search operation is ongoing. We will continue patrolling the area to locate and contain the animal.”
Gomez expressed hope that their story raises awareness about the dangers posed by loose animals.
She had heartfelt words for her daughter, stating, “You’re a hero. You saved my sisters, and I will be forever proud of you.”
