An elderly Seattle, Washington woman has died from injuries sustained during a violent carjacking, police said.
“The suspect was arrested and charged with assault,” Seattle Police Detective Eric Munoz said in police records. post Officers responded to a report of a carjacking in the Madison Valley area around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning. When officers arrived, they found a person administering CPR to a woman lying in the road.
“This woman was in this car fighting someone else’s dog for her dog. It was like it wasn’t about the car, it was about the dog.”
Neighbors identified the woman as Ruth Dalton, 80, owner of Grandma’s Critter Care. Police say that during the carjacking and struggle, she was “dragged by the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.” Dalton reportedly had several dogs in her vehicle at the time of the carjacking. The Seattle Times reported..
Munoz said several passersby witnessed the attack and tried to help the woman but were unsuccessful.
A woman who witnessed the incident told The Times that the carjacker ran the victim over from behind before fleeing in a vehicle.
“He didn’t have to back down,” Laura Dynan said. “This woman was in this car fighting over someone else’s dog and her dog. It was like it wasn’t about the car, it was about the dog.”
Seattle Fire Department rescue workers attempted to save Dalton’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dinan told The Times that some of the dogs in the car escaped, but added that others were still inside the vehicle when the carjackers fled.
A few hours later, police said they responded to a report of a dead dog and found the Daltons’ car abandoned in a residential area about five miles from the scene.
Dinan defended Seattle against those who claim the city is crime-ridden, despite the horrific death of an elderly woman in her own neighborhood.
“There’s a lot of stories and a lot of people being interviewed about how awful Seattle is and how unsafe it is,” she told the Times, “but people have spoken out and come to help her. I want someone to talk about that.”
Munoz said police are actively searching for the perpetrators and are investigating the incident as a homicide.
