Firefighters in the Texas Panhandle have recovered the body of 83-year-old Joyce Blankenship from her home, which was destroyed in the largest wildfire in Texas history. Officials say the fire has burned more than 1 million acres but is only 3% contained.
Hemphill County Emergency Management Coordinator Bill Kendall Said KFDA CBS10 in Amarillo, Texas reported that more than 40 homes were destroyed in the Smokehouse Creek wildfire. The fire started in Stinnett, Texas, earlier this week and spread east. The passage of a cold front on Tuesday changed wind direction and moved the fire south.

A video posted on X shows a large fire and its coverage in the Texas Panhandle region. At 1 million acres, the fire is larger than Rhode Island.

On Tuesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered a massive response from state agencies to help fight the rapidly spreading fires, Breitbart Texas reported.
The National Park Service is also currently providing assistance to firefighters in the Texas Panhandle.

Stinnett officials reported that firefighters recovered the body of Joyce Blankenship, 83, a retired substitute teacher. Her grandson, Lee Quesada, reported her missing. Firefighters found her in her burnt-out home, a local CBS affiliate reported Wednesday.
By Thursday morning, temperatures in the area had fallen into the 20s and snow had begun to fall. Weather changes have little impact on fires that continue to spread, MyHighPlains.com report.
According to multiple media reports, thousands of cattle died in the historic fire.
