84-year-old McDonald’s employee retires after 45 years: ‘Well-deserved break’

After 45 years of serving customers, employees at a McDonald's in western Pennsylvania are finally able to hang up their badges with golden arches.

Before Dot Sharpe, 84, finished her last shift at a Gibsonia fast food restaurant, she received her last order from her granddaughter, a co-worker. She started working there in her 1978.

According to reports, a line of Sharp's regular customers formed around the building at the drive-thru to wish him well in his final days.

“The best part of my job has always been the people,” the octogenarian said in a press release obtained by the FOX television station. “I love my customers and my colleagues.”

The retiree, who was a working single mother, also praised McDonald's for being flexible with her busy schedule.

“McDonald's owners have always done a great job,” Sharp said. “I was a single mother. They gave me all the flexibility I needed to make a living and take care of my children.”

As an employee, Sharp has seen the introduction of classic McDonald's menu items such as the McDouble and McChicken.

McMuffins and Filet-O-Fish existed when Sharp started its business, but Chicken McNuggets weren't introduced until 1979.

In 1978, all McDonald's products cost less than $1. The price of a large order of fries was about 50 cents, and the price of a Big Mac could reach 90 cents.

Megan Sweeney, owner-operator of McDonald's in Givennia, praised Sharpe's work and called him an “amazing contributor” to the restaurant's location.

“She brought a cheerful personality to every shift and always put our customers first,” Sweeney said in a news release. “We hope Dot is enjoying some well-deserved time off in retirement.”
