Canadian Police Recommended Rates for an 85-year-old man who allegedly drove his car into two of three teenagers who were playing a prank on his doorbell in February.
Surveillance camera footage shows a driver speeding towards a group of teenagers fleeing down a street in Abbotsford, B.C., on Valentine’s Day, before being hit by a vehicle off-camera.
“When I see the footage, it’s disturbing. It’s very disturbing.”
Police said the teenagers escaped by pressing doorbells, a practice known in Canada as “Nikki Nikki Nine Doors.”
Two of the teenagers were shot, and the third narrowly escaped being shot. Global NewsBoth were hospitalized in serious condition but were later released.
Abbotsford Police Department spokesman Constable Art Steele said the elderly man could be charged with assault with a weapon and authorities may also recommend he be charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
“When you look at the footage, it’s disturbing. It’s very disturbing,” Steele said. “We respect that and we’re committed to making sure that any investigation that we proceed with is complete, thorough and fact-based.”
Steele raised concerns that it took too long to charge the man, explaining that police had to rule out other possibilities, such as a vehicle breakdown.
“There is in no way any deliberate delay or time taken,” Steele said. “I want the public to understand that the Abbotsford Police Department is taking ample and appropriate time to complete these investigations and present them to the justice system so that we can achieve justice and do a thorough investigation for the victims and the community.”
Steele said it took a long time to review all the data related to the case that was stored in the SUV.
Police said the man’s driver’s license has been suspended and his vehicle has been impounded.
