’86 Mets over ’98 Yankees in Super Series

Want to start a fight in New York City? Forget politics and religion.

Join us for the age-old baseball debate in the Big Apple. Who would theoretically win in the Subway Series between the dominant 1986 Mets and his 1998 powerhouse Yankees?

Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry believe the 108-win Amazons will beat the 114-win Bombers in a head-to-head death match between the best teams in MLB history.

They should know that because they played for both clubs at the time.

“They were two great teams, but the 1986 team was young and hungry,” said Strawberry, who was recently recovering from a heart attack. “We would have defeated every challenger, including the 1998 Yankees.”

In 1986, the prime-time Strawberry, whose long, looping swing drew comparisons to Ted Williams, hit 27 home runs and had 93 RBIs.. In 1998, the 6-foot-6 slugger’s 24 home runs helped the Yankees win their 24th World Series.

“I think the ’86 Mets,” Strawberry previously told YES Network’s Jack Currie. “We had a completely different view of ourselves. We intimidated teams. Teams hated playing us. . . . They played four games in a row against Shea. We knew going into this we would be lucky to get one win just because we didn’t let our team down.”

Gooden, whose No. 16 jersey will be retired against the Mets on April 14 against Citi Field, agreed it will be an epic battle between two great teams.

“I’m going to undergo the ’86 Met for my heart,” Dr. K told the Post. “On paper the Yankees looked better. But you play on the field. I say it’s going to be seven. Then the Mets will win.”

Strawberry, who will wear No. 18 on his jersey at Citi Field on June 1, said the 1998 Yankees team was “great and overwhelming,” but the 1986 team came out on top because of the starting pitchers. I felt that it was.

He gave the Yankees, which features Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera, an advantage in the bullpen.

Is it debatable?

The 1998 Yankees were the winningest team in baseball history.

They went 114-48 in the regular season and won 11 of 13 playoff games, including four in the World Series, defeating the San Diego Padres, finishing with an unbeatable 125-50 record.

The 1986 Mets set a franchise winning record and there was no question who was MLB’s best club during the regular season.

The Amazons had fans sweating during the postseason with epic series wins over the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, going 8-5.

“No matter who we play, I would never bet on the ’86 team,” team captain Davey Johnson told the Post a week before both teams opened Thursday. “We always found a way. . . . There’s nothing these guys can’t overcome.”
