Three men who allegedly helped plan the September 11 terrorist attacks and are currently awaiting trial in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, including alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, have accepted plea deals with the military commission convening authority.
Family members of 9/11 victims told The Washington Post that as part of the plea deals, the terrorism suspects will avoid the death penalty.
“The Military Commission Convening Body has entered into pre-trial agreements with three 9/11 co-defendants: Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Walid Mohammed Saleh Mubarak bin Attash and Mustafa Ahmed Adam Al Hawsawi,” a spokesman for the Office of Military Commissions (OMC) confirmed to The Post on Wednesday.
OMC said specific terms of the pretrial agreement have not been disclosed at this time. The defendants are accused of providing training, funding and other support to 19 terrorists who hijacked airliners on September 11, 2001, and crashed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
