A 9-year-old boy has been shot dead and a 20-year-old woman injured in an altercation outside a home in Chicago’s southern suburbs, police said Friday.
Officers responded to a call to the Mattson shooting around 6 p.m. Thursday, city police said.

The caller told the 911 caller that Son had been shot. Police said at a press conference that the boy had been shot in the abdomen and died in hospital.
The woman’s wounds were not considered life-threatening. Police have not released details of the shooting.

The Cook County Coroner’s Office identified the boy as Omuiri Jones Brown, according to WMAQ-TV.
The boy’s grandmother, Denise Jones, told WBBM-TV that her granddaughter got into a fight with another girl at school. The other girl and some friends then drove to Jones’ house.

Jones said they got into a fight outside and a teenage boy who was in the group of girls started shooting at them.
She described her grandson as an honor student who loved to dance. The boy continued to stay at Jones’ home after his mother moved to Chicago.

“His mother moved, but he didn’t want to go to Chicago and was afraid of being shot so he stayed here,” Jones said.
