Incident at Nursing Home Leads to Arrest
A 95-year-old woman has been detained in New York for allegedly murdering an 89-year-old nurse’s roommate using a wheelchair pedal.
Galina Smirnova is facing charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Following her arrest, she was moved to another hospital ahead of her next court appearance.
According to authorities, nurses discovered Nina Kraktsov, an 89-year-old Holocaust survivor from Ukraine, unresponsive and covered in blood at the Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Coney Island. This tragic event happened just a short time after she was last observed sleeping.
About an hour later, a nurse noticed Kraktsov with severe injuries on her face, while Smirnova was allegedly seen cleaning blood from her hands and clothes in their shared bathroom.
Reports indicate that blood was found on Smirnova’s clothing, suggesting a violent confrontation. Investigators also recovered a bloody wheelchair pedal thought to be used as the murder weapon, found discarded from a third-floor window.
Families of residents at the nursing home have expressed concern regarding the safety of their loved ones in light of this incident.
One family member shared feelings of unease, stating, “I was terrified. I actually didn’t know what I was thinking. The first thing I did was call to check on my mom and make sure she was okay.”
