Former inmate Ryan Peake earns spot in Open Championship despite biker gang history

Ryan Peak’s Unique Journey to the New Zealand Open

Ryan Peak is set to tee off at Royal Portrush on Thursday, but his path to this moment is quite unusual compared to others in the field.

He’s one of the few Australian golfers who emerged victorious at the New Zealand Open, having spent five decades behind bars prior to this achievement.

Peak was a promising junior golfer and turned professional at just 19. Unfortunately, he became “burned out” by the sport, as he mentioned in an interview. Seeking a new path, he joined a biker gang, losing sight of golf for a couple of years.

“I just got normalized to it,” Peak, now 31, reflected on his time with the gang. He found a sense of belonging and excitement that he didn’t quite see elsewhere.

The allure of the outlaw lifestyle, though thrilling, often led to risky situations. Peak recalls moments where he found himself in trouble, not entirely by intention but rather circumstance.

Eventually, Peak found himself in a correctional facility, where he realized he needed to strive for something better. His time there became a turning point for him.

“I didn’t benefit from being a bikey,” he admitted. While he enjoyed that phase of his life, it wasn’t building a future. Instead, it seemed to push him back, perhaps even towards more trouble.

At the time of his legal issues, he played alongside notable golfers like Cameron Smith. After serving his sentence, he gradually returned to golf, reinvigorated. With the support of coach Richie Smith and his family, he obtained his Australian tour card this season and clinched his first professional win at the New Zealand Open.

Peak has qualified for the upcoming Open Championship, marking an impressive comeback.

His tournament debut starts at 2:19am on Thursday, alongside Phil Mickelson and Daniel Van Tonder.
