Suni Lee’s Journey to Paris Olympics

Suni Lee was absent from the Parish Games last year, which was disappointing for her and her fans. In April 2023, she shared plans to conclude her time at Auburn due to health issues — specifically, kidney problems that prevented her from receiving medical clearance from the university’s doctor.

She faced considerable challenges, gaining 45 pounds that affected her ability to perform. “My fingers were so swollen that they wouldn’t fit in my grip. I couldn’t grab the bar,” she reflected in November 2023.

In a recent conversation, Lee admitted there were times when she wanted to step away from gymnastics entirely. “I told my coach I didn’t want to do this anymore. I just doubted myself more, especially during the Olympic trials,” she said. However, despite these doubts, her perseverance shone through. She managed to compete in Paris and even snagged three medals: a gold with her team and bronzes in the uneven bars and balance beam.

Lee was recently nominated for the Best Comeback Athlete at the 2025 ESPYS and won the award. “It’s surreal, honestly. Traveling has been tough, but being here is incredible,” she shared, filled with excitement to celebrate with fellow nominees.

When attending the award ceremony, she was seen using a cane, a reminder of the journey she has been through.

“They’ve helped me visit amazing places and build great relationships,” Lee reflected about her support system. Remarkably, she noted that she didn’t feel fully normal until after the Olympics. “I’m still learning how my body adapts to medications and manages the demands of training,” she explained.

Going to Paris turned out to be a pivotal moment in her career, allowing her to double her medal collection and mark a significant achievement in ESPY history.
