Lightning Strike Claims Life at Jackson Township Archery Club
Tragedy struck on Wednesday evening when one individual lost his life, and 14 others were injured due to a lightning strike at an archery club in Jackson Township, New Jersey.
The Jackson Police Department responded to an emergency call at the Black Knights Bow Benders Archery Range around 7:13 PM. Upon arrival, they found a 61-year-old man identified as Robert Montgomery, who had already received CPR, while other participants were assessed for their injuries. Unfortunately, Montgomery later succumbed to his injuries.
The injuries reported among the other victims included burns and pain, with at least one person experiencing a loss of consciousness but later waking up. It was noted that some of the affected individuals were younger, perhaps around seven years old.
This event was organized by a Cub Scouts group, and reports suggest that three adult instructors were hospitalized. Among the injured were four children, as outlined by various news reports. Jerry Mindursky, the President of the archery club, mentioned that the deceased man was not a member of the club.
Mindursky described the incident as sudden, expressing his prayers for those affected. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy also commented on the situation via a verified post, noting, “I was informed tonight about the lightning strike at Jackson’s outdoor archery range. As of now, we have one confirmed death and several injuries, with all victims transported by first responders. Please keep all involved in your thoughts during this tragic time.”
Montgomery was reportedly a volunteer instructor, and the lightning struck a tree close to where the shooting was occurring. This incident follows a recent dangerous weather pattern in the area; just days prior, two people died due to severe rain and flash flooding, prompting Governor Murphy to declare a state of emergency.
