Shane Raleigh Returns to Portrush for the Open Championship
Portrush, Northern Ireland – If anyone could feel the weight of memories on the first tee at Portrush, it was Shane Raleigh.
He claimed victory at the British Open there in 2019 and had a mix of anticipation and nerves about his first shot this week.
“I’ve been battling with the thoughts of this golf round in my head for a few weeks now,” Raleigh shared after finishing with a 1-under par 70, putting him just three shots back from the lead. “That first tee shot… it wasn’t easy. I felt a bit uncomfortable.”
He likened the pressure to that of the Ryder Cup, saying, “I was wrestling with it all morning. Once I got past that, I felt fine for the rest of the week. My goal is to move forward in this tournament.”
He continues, “I want to have a shot at it on Sunday. Getting off the first tee well is key to that.”
While many players opt for an iron on the difficult starting hole, Raleigh took a risk with a driver, aware of the hazards lurking on both sides of the fairway.
This was the same hole where Rory McIlroy had a disastrous first shot in 2019, a moment that haunted him throughout the tournament.
Raleigh’s first drive traveled 241 yards, landing him in the rough but still setting up a manageable 183-yard second shot, which he navigated towards the green with two putts.
“I watched a lot of golf this morning,” he reflected. “[Harrington] hit a good tee shot and played his irons well, which had me feeling a bit pressured. Thankfully, I found my rhythm.”
Having won the 2019 Open with an impressive six-shot lead, Raleigh received a warm welcome from the crowd as he made his way to the first tee.
He completed his round and received another round of applause as he reached the 18th, where fellow Irishman McIlroy was also competing.
“I didn’t expect so many people around the 18th today,” Raleigh remarked, noting the atmosphere. “That added some pressure on that five-footer for par at the end. Missing that would have been a real shame.”
The crowd’s energy was palpable, and Raleigh acknowledged their support, stating, “It felt fantastic. I won last time I was here, and I tried to channel that into motivation.”
However, he also admitted to feeling slightly apprehensive leading up to the first round. “I went for a walk last night to calm my nerves,” he confessed. “Some might say I was a bit quiet this morning, but I’m relieved to have the first round behind me and really look forward to the rest of the week.”
