Planned Parenthood Voices Concerns on Abortion Access
In a recent appearance on “PBS Newshour,” Planned Parenthood expressed its strong opposition to new legislation that aims to limit abortion access. The organization described this law as effectively unconstitutional, labeling it a “backdoor ban” on abortion services. This statement comes in the wake of a post-funding settlement that Planned Parenthood claims undermines their role as advocates for reproductive rights.
Johnson, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, asserted that, “This settlement bill is devastating for patients and the entire healthcare system.” They emphasized that decades of planning have gone into targeting and isolating Planned Parenthood’s initiatives. Johnson argued that the organization’s goal is to reveal attempts to undermine providers who fight for abortion access, especially in areas where Medicaid does not provide coverage. They highlighted the importance of the First Amendment, stating that protecting free speech and the right to association is vital for safeguarding the rights of Americans seeking healthcare.
During the segment, host William Blangham noted that some conservatives argue the debate is not solely about Planned Parenthood, but rather about Congress’s control over taxpayer funding. These lawmakers assert that they are simply opposed to spending taxpayer dollars on abortion and reproductive care.
In response, Johnson reiterated that the law has been crafted to specifically target Planned Parenthood and its affiliates. They pointed out that the regulation’s design amounts to a targeted abortion ban, stating, “Screenings are set to be stripped under this harmful law, while access to abortion services becomes increasingly restricted.” This effectively robs patients of essential services they need.
