John Spelling’s Wish to Meet CJ Stroud
A 12-year-old named John Spelling, who is from Dallas, recently had the opportunity to meet Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud, thanks to the “Make-A-Wish” program. John, who was born with a serious heart condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, had undergone emergency open-heart surgery.
While in the hospital, he saw NRG Stadium and became a fan of the Texans. During a segment on ESPN’s “My Wish,” John expressed hope for his health, saying, “I pray to God that he will heal me quickly and that I can go back.” He mentioned that CJ Stroud is now his favorite player because of Stroud’s humility and how he prioritizes his faith.
On the day they met, John got to spend quality time with Stroud and some of his teammates, even signing a one-day contract to officially join the Texans and participating in practice huddles. When Stroud learned that John became a fan while looking out from his hospital room, he smiled, acknowledging John’s faith.
Stroud gifted John a signed jersey that had a personal Bible verse written on it. The inscription read, “To John! Go Texans!! Pray for Buddy!” This gesture, along with their warm embrace, visibly touched Stroud. “You’re going to make me cry, mate,” he said, clearly moved by John’s faith and spirit.
Stroud has continually spoken about his faith, mentioning that improving his relationship with God is a goal he strives for as he looks ahead.
It’s heartwarming to see how moments like this can inspire not just the recipients but also the individuals like Stroud, who are reminded of the importance of faith and perseverance.
