Herman Excels at the British Open
In Portrush, Northern Ireland, Brian Herman isn’t concerned about opinions regarding his status as a top player in the world.
He also doesn’t seem to be focused on his reputation as a notable British Open champion.
Instead, Herman’s sights are set on something bigger as he enters the 36-hole opening at the 153rd Royal Portrush, looking to reclaim the claret jug, bolstered by an impressive second-round score of 65.
Leading with an 8-under par, he finished before some of the later tee times, including Scotty Schaeffler and John Lahm.
By the end, Herman was one stroke ahead of Haotong Lee, who managed to finish at nine under, while Rasmus Hojgaard, Robert McIntyre, Tyrrell Hutton, and Tony Finau finished at five and four under, respectively.
Rory McIlroy and Keegan Bradley trailed, both at three under following their second rounds.
“I feel really comfortable here,” Herman remarked. He acknowledged that, although Hoylake and Portrush are quite different courses, the game itself shares similarities. “You have to understand how far everything is and not get frustrated along the way,” he added. “You’re bound to get some bad breaks and end up in tricky spots, but that’s just part of it.”
Interestingly, Herman didn’t initially take to links golf. “I won at John Deere in 2014, and that was the first time I played at Liverpool. I wasn’t exactly fond of it then,” he reflected. “But after that week, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I loved the challenge.”
“I struggled in the following Opens but have found my rhythm here.”
Herman completed the round without a single bogey, recording six birdies, including one on the 18th.
As he gears up for the third round, he aims to edge closer to the weekend like he did two years ago.
“I’m not aiming for anything heroic,” he said. “I know I can play this game well, and I’d prefer a repeat performance from 2023.”
“This course is tough,” he noted. “The pin placements are tricky, and you’ve got to think carefully about each shot. Mistakes happen, and you might find yourself in a situation you didn’t plan for.”
