The ESPY Awards may have wrapped up, but the “SportsCenters” are still dishing out their own prizes for the best cold opening of the day.
On Friday morning, Randy Scott and Gary Strifsky were in the spotlight as they embraced briefly; it was a playful moment that had the camera zoom in on them. I mean, it was a light-hearted exchange, though things got a bit silly as Strifsky tried to cover their faces, and Scott almost disappeared from view.
“Well, it’s time to ‘kiss goodbye,'” Scott quipped before transitioning into a discussion about the show’s big success. “I guess baseball isn’t the only place to say that nowadays,” he added, perhaps hinting at more than just sports.
This amusing snippet echoed a viral moment from a Coldplay concert, where the CEO of an astronomy company, Andy Byron, and his HR chief, Christine Cabot, were caught sharing a close embrace, creating quite a buzz online.
After witnessing the tender moment, Coldplay’s Chris Martin joked that “they might be cheating or just really shy.” It’s a twist, considering Byron is married to someone else, which certainly added to the scandal.
The internet had a field day with this incident, turning it into one of the year’s most talked-about memes.
This is the latest in CEOs.
Other figures in the sports world weren’t shy about joining in on the fun either. The Mariners got involved by posting a playful tweet, asking, “Do you need a big damper to do the dumping?” They cheekily encouraged anyone who had issues at the Coldplay concert to reach out via a funny email address.
Meanwhile, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, a Double-A affiliate of the Mets, humorously assured fans that “happy couples are welcome!” They even promised not to put anyone on the video board, which was a light-hearted nod to the viral video.
