A man who attacked a family at Grand Central Station on Christmas Day 2023 has been sentenced to over 25 years in prison after a chaotic courtroom hearing. Stephen Hutcherson, 38, faced judgment at Manhattan Crown Court, receiving a term of between 26 and 29 years for a random assault last month.
During the proceedings, Hutcherson made a bold statement, claiming the actions of the FBI had pressured him, alluding to his connection with former FBI director James Comey’s daughter.
He also took a shot at Assistant District Attorney Ashlyn Dean, telling her that “the prosecutor has just been fired,” referencing the recent dismissal of Mohren Comey from the Department of Justice.
Hutcherson’s erratic behavior in court was noted. Dean remarked on his refusal to take responsibility, often shifting blame. “Every time he acknowledged his actions, he had an excuse,” she told Judge Marisol Martin Alonzo.
Details of the attack revealed a disturbing scene. Hutcherson first assaulted the mother of the family with a fork before attacking her two teenage daughters—14 and 16—while they were having breakfast at the transit hub. Dean described how one daughter was stabbed in the back and the other in the leg as they tried to escape.
He was apprehended soon after but was involved in another incident in jail where he attacked fellow inmates.
In June, Hutcherson was found guilty of multiple charges, including assault and other serious offenses. The district attorney, Alvin Bragg, characterized Hutcherson’s sentence as a necessary measure, expressing concern for the victims still grappling with the aftermath of the attacks.
“New Yorkers, commuters, and tourists deserve to feel safe while using public transport. We must hold individuals accountable for these violent acts,” Bragg stated in a comment.
