Brave dogs in NYC take part in a look-alike contest for Krypto from 'Superman'

Heroic Hounds Gather in Hudson Yards

In New York City, some truly adorable dogs are making headlines. On Friday, a bunch of heroic canines showed up at Hudson Yards for a Crypto Superdog look-alike contest, and only one dog went home with a shiny red cape to match its “Superman” buddy.

Sofia, a seven-year-old dog from Brooklyn, walked away with the $1,000 prize. Her owner emphasized that it wasn’t merely Sofia’s looks that won the day, but rather her protective and caring spirit that truly embodies what a superdog should be.

“She’s always on the lookout for other dogs. She never starts a fight. She wants everyone to be included,” said Meredith Amspoker, who discovered the contest through a friend. Interestingly, since the new “Superman” movie hit theaters, people have been stopping them more on their walks.

“Even while I was there, someone commented, ‘That looks like a Superman dog,’” she added.

Sofia remained composed, ears flapping in the wind, even as a smaller dog tried to sniff her. She managed to charm the judges by tilting her head and giving them that irresistibly cute look.

Though not all 50 participating dogs resembled Superman’s trusty companions, their proud owners showcased their own dogs’ superhero-like qualities. Some pups even received awards—Little Jeffrey, for instance, was recognized as a runner-up for looking the most crypto-like.

His owner, 72-year-old Ed Medina, shared his simple reason for considering Jeffrey a hero. “He makes me happy,” Medina said, proudly wearing a jersey featuring Jeffrey’s painted face while his pup devoured treats.

Actress Mallorie Sievert, 23, also joined the fun and brought along three friends from around Manhattan. “I think those ‘crypto’ dogs are so unattractive, and I really love the quirky ones,” she remarked. She even launched an Instagram account in college to showcase campus pups. Sievert appreciated the diversity in the contest, noting how it filled the Plaza with a variety of dogs.

“I love New York City—where else can you see 50 dogs in capes?”
