Scottie Scheffler holds strong lead heading into the final round of The Open

Scotty Schaeffler Leads at Royal Portrush

Scotty Schaeffler finished the third round in the lead during the opening round at Royal Portrush. The 29-year-old golfer, showcasing impressive skill, moved to 14 under for the tournament after shooting a four-under-par round. Schaeffler played without a bogey, scoring two birdies and an eagle—his eagle on the seventh hole and birdies on the eighth and sixteenth holes.

If Schaeffler manages to maintain his lead and win, it would mark his second major title of the year, following his victory at the PGA Championship in May. This win would bring him closer to a rare accomplishment—joining the ranks of Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods, who all won a Master, PGA Championship, and Open before turning 30. It’s quite an impressive feat, really.

While Schaeffler held strong at the top, there was notable movement among his challengers. Matt Fitzpatrick, who started the round at 9 under but finished par, slipped from second to third place. Li Haotong, however, climbed to second place, finishing the round at 10 under after a solid two-under par performance.

Adding to the excitement, there were four players tied for fourth, each vying for a strong finish in the final round. Rory McIlroy made headlines with a commendable five-under par, bringing him to a total of 8 under for the tournament. Alongside him, Chris Gotterup, Harris English, and Tyrrell Hatton also shot three under on Saturday, all improving their standings to 8 under.

Brian Herman, who started tied for third with an 8-under par, faced difficulties during the round, struggling to finish with two over and dropping to ninth.

As the tournament heads into the final round, here’s how the leaderboard stands:

  • 1. Schaeffler, 14 under
  • 2. Li, 10 under
  • 3. Fitzpatrick, 9 under
  • T-4. McIlroy, 8 under
  • T-4. Gotterup, 8 under
  • T-4. English, 8 under
  • T-4. Hatton, 8 under
  • 8. Xander Schauffele, 7 under

  • T-9. Nikolai Whaigard, 6 under
  • T-9. Robert McIntyre, 6 under
  • T-9. Rasmus Hojgaard, 6 under

The final round is set to tee off at 8:30 a.m. ET. It’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds. Will Schaeffler hold onto his lead? Only time will tell.
