Scottie Scheffler is almost certain to win the British Open

Portrush, Northern Ireland – British Open Update

As the British Open progresses, all that’s left for Scotty Schaeffler is to clinch his title as the “champion golfer” at Royal Portrush after the final 18 holes on Sunday.

It’s hard not to recall the many final round celebrations Tiger Woods had during his impressive 15 major wins.

So, here’s a little spoiler: it looks like Sunday is shaping up to be quite the final act… although Schaeffler won’t be donning that familiar red shirt.

If the current trend continues, with Schaeffler holding a solid four-shot advantage going into the last round, then, well, it could be a calm echo in the pubs of Northern Ireland the next morning.

I’m sure you’ve heard something similar before, but Schaeffler, at 29, seems to be in complete control. There was a clinical precision to his game on Saturday.

Now, don’t take this the wrong way, but his consistency almost comes off as dull. It’s like watching a skilled surgeon—focused and largely emotionless.

He finished Saturday just a shot ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick, but by Sunday, he’ll be starting with a four-shot lead, and a six-shot cushion above Fitzpatrick.

This win would tie up one of the few loose ends in his career, as he only needs the US Open to complete a grand slam. Still, there’s a good chance he won’t sweep all three before it’s over.

Of course, as they say, anything can happen with 18 holes left to play, especially in the unpredictable world of Link Golf.

Even so, it seems like Schaeffler’s competitors are already acknowledging their uphill battle heading into dinner on Saturday night.

Since 2022, he has converted all 10 of his 54-hole leads into wins, which is impressive.

When asked about his approach for the final day, Schaeffler said, “Your guess is as good as mine. I like being here. This is what we work hard for, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge tomorrow.”

“Winning a major championship is no small feat. I’ve put myself in a strong position; I’ll just focus on getting the ball on the fairway,” he added.

Schaeffler earned his first major at the 2022 Masters by three shots and followed it up with another win at the 2024 Masters by four. Just two months ago, he captured the PGA Championship by five shots, and now he’s aiming to add the UK Open to his collection.

“If he continues playing at this level, it’ll be tough to catch him tomorrow,” noted Rory McIlroy, currently sitting at 8-under, six shots back.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Lee shared about competing with Schaeffler in the last pairing on Sunday. It’s bound to be thrilling.

Harris English, also at 8-under, described Schaeffler’s current form as “incredible.”

“I consider Scotty a friend. His work ethic amazes me. He’s the top player in the world, and I don’t know how he does it, but he works harder than anyone I’ve witnessed,” English added.

Schaeffler remained bogey-free on Saturday, having only recorded one bogey over his last two rounds and a total of three for the week. It’s impressive, really.

“Holding clean cards at major championships typically leads to good outcomes,” Schaeffler commented.

While he excels in all aspects of his game, his putting has particularly stood out this week, something Fitzpatrick took note of during Saturday’s play.

“You’d expect that level of skill from someone like Scotty,” Fitzpatrick remarked.
