Ben McDonald Injured in Fall

Ben McDonald, who was the Baltimore Orioles’ first overall pick in the 1989 MLB Draft, shared on social media that he sustained serious injuries after falling 25 feet from a deer stand.

In a video he posted, McDonald is seen in a hospital bed. He described his situation on X, stating, “This sounds like something that looks like a serious concussion, and it sounds like it fell from a deer stand 25 feet above yesterday morning (I still don’t remember anything).” He reassured his followers, saying, “I’m fine. I’m grateful to everyone for checking me out. I’m very fortunate… with a concussion and two cracked vertebrae… I’ll call the Orioles game soon after returning to #Birdland.”

McDonald is known for his love of hunting, previously sharing a post in December that garnered attention. He recounted a hunting experience where he reflected on memories of his father, who passed away in January. He described how a large buck unexpectedly appeared, leading to a memorable hunt. “I don’t usually share many of my thoughts about social media, but this is too good to share,” he wrote, reminiscing about their time together on the field and court.

He added, “I cried out a good cry to hope he was here for another hunting season or to talk about it again. Five minutes after drying my eyes and focusing on the hunt… out walked the absolute giant.” McDonald attributed this moment to “divine intervention,” stating, “The great outdoors are home to me… It’s probably the most comfortable place I’m… probably the most comfortable!”

McDonald shone as a pitcher for LSU before being drafted by the Orioles. Over his career, he had a 3.91 ERA with 894 strikeouts over 211 appearances, eventually wrapping up his professional play with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1997. Currently, he works as a color commentator for the Orioles’ radio broadcasts.
