NYC cyclist remembered as a champion for safe streets among 2 killed by a driver

A grieving family shared their sadness on Sunday.

Kevin Scott Crookshank, 55, was getting ready for the NYC Century Bike Tour, which he was set to join this September after taking a six-year break. Tragically, he was struck by a driver of a stolen Chevy Malibu, who was speeding through median traffic on Manhattan’s Bowery and Canal Streets on Saturday morning.

During this unfortunate accident, Crookshank, a loan manager at Chase Bank and a cherished husband, had been an advocate for safer streets.

His family mentioned in a statement, “Kevin has been a huge supporter of transport alternatives for years.”

He had signed up for the TA Century Ride in September, riding his favorite bike, and was out on a long four-hour bike ride to Coney Island the morning of the accident.

This bicycle race is set to occur on September 21st, having kicked off in 1990 before a brief hiatus.

Donna Asensio Romero, 23, was allegedly behind the wheel of the car that fatally struck 63-year-old May Cowck, who was sitting on a bench at the time.

Romero and her passenger, 22-year-old Kennedyla Craft, attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended soon after. Police discovered drugs and alcohol in the Chevy.

Another organization dedicated to supporting families affected by road fatalities expressed their sorrow over the loss of two innocent lives. They stated to the Post, “Families in our organization are all too familiar with the endless pain that comes with such tragedies.”

Dahlia Goldenberg, Associate Director of Safe Street Family, said, “Canal Street is one of the most dangerous streets in all of Manhattan, notorious for pedestrian and cyclist casualties. A thorough redesign is necessary to enhance safety.”
