DSA criticizes AOC for opposing amendment on funding for Israel's Iron Dome

Ocasio-Cortez Faces Criticism for Voting Record on Israel Funding

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the representative from New York, is under scrutiny for her recent vote regarding an amendment aimed at blocking U.S. financial support for Israel’s Iron Dome. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are pushing back against a proposed $500 million allocation within Congress’s annual defense budget that is intended to support missile defense systems. Ocasio-Cortez’s vote against this amendment has drawn ire, especially from more progressive factions.

R-Ga. has been vocal in criticizing some colleagues, particularly those on the progressive side, for their choice to vote against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s amendment. He stated, “An arms embargo should mean taking all weapons away from the forces perpetrating genocide. There are no exceptions to this rule.” Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez confirmed she opposed Greene’s amendment which would have ceased funding for the Israeli military’s Iron Dome program.

The DSA labeled her vote against the overall defense funding bill as supporting what they described as an “imperialist military-industrial complex,” arguing it contributes to “funding for the Israeli massacre.” They expressed deep disappointment regarding her stance on the Iron Dome.

In their statement, they noted that the Iron Dome, along with other U.S.-financed defense systems, has facilitated military operations by Israel in multiple countries over recent years. “It’s concerning that Ocasio-Cortez acknowledges Israel’s aggressive military actions yet still accepts military aid,” they said, urging her to reject future funding for the Iron Dome.

They commended other progressive members, such as Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, for voting in opposition to the amendment.

After the vote, Ocasio-Cortez posted her thoughts on X, elaborating that Greene’s amendment would not effectively reduce offensive aid to Israel, but could diminish support for defensive capabilities, placing civilian lives at risk. “It feels like a contradiction to try to reduce casualties while still allowing for offensive weapons,” she commented. “My goal has always been to limit U.S. support for violence in these conflicts.”

This latest clash highlights ongoing divisions among Democrats regarding support for Israel, particularly in light of Ocasio-Cortez’s past controversies for not sufficiently criticizing Israeli policies. A notable instance occurred in 2021 when Democrats collectively voiced their disapproval of funding for the Iron Dome.

Ocasio-Cortez was candid about her emotional response during those debates, admitting in a letter to her constituents that she “cried” over the callousness of such decisions, illustrating a broader disconnect she perceives within the political landscape.

The broader defense bill which passed last week encompasses $83.2 billion earmarked for defense spending for fiscal year 2026, detailing allocations apart from the National Defense Authorization Act. Greene’s amendment, aiming to cut $500 million from Israel’s missile defense program, sadly failed, garnering just 6 votes in favor while 422 opposed.
