Deion Sanders Faces Health Challenges

It seems Deion Sanders hasn’t quite returned to his prime just yet. The head coach of Colorado State shared a video on Sunday discussing some health issues that have kept him away from the spotlight this offseason.

“You know I’m still going through something,” Sanders mentioned while speaking to his daughter Shelomi and son Dion Jr. in a video on the latter’s YouTube channel. “I haven’t recovered for a long time.”

In the video, Sanders was seen taking an ice bath, making some basketball shots, and relaxing after a tennis lesson. He even made a reference to a 1.3-mile “run” he completed with Shelomi.

“He was good,” Sheremi remarked after the run.

“I’m proud,” Sanders responded. “But we’re getting better, right?”

At 57, Sanders is typically active in headlines and on social media. However, he has missed several events due to these health issues this offseason. He recently showed up at Big 12 Media Day, but when pressed for specifics about his illness, he chose not to elaborate.

“I’m already back,” he told ESPN. “I’m here today, dealing with the responsibility, and I look forward to it. I can’t wait. [Players] I haven’t seen yet, but I’m very excited about it.”

He added, “[In] athletics, sometimes there’s that bull junk,” acknowledging the challenges. “But I’m not here to discuss my health. I want to talk about my team.”

Prior to his appearance at the media event, Sanders missed the wedding of his former star player, Heisman winner Travis Hunter. Back in May, he had said, “What I’m dealing with now is a whole other level,” noting that he lost 14 pounds and felt low on energy.

In June, he provided an update, assuring, “Everything is OK, and it will continue to be. We are excited to be back in Colorado, working with our staff, teams, and all programs.”

In a video on July 17, Sanders indicated that more details would be shared soon. “I’m back in Colorado next week,” he mentioned, hinting that this summer’s seclusion had a reason behind it.

The Colorado coach and NFL Hall of Famer has faced several health scares over the past few years, including surgery in 2023 to fix a blood clot in his left leg.
