Charges Against Jerome Powell by Rep. Luna

Representative Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, has leveled accusations against Jerome Powell, claiming he lied under oath to the Department of Justice, which could lead to criminal charges. This action appears to stem from ongoing demands from Trump’s supporters for Powell, an appointee of Trump, to be removed before his term ends in mid-2026.

Luna’s charges are outlined in a letter addressed to the DOJ, where she has alleged that Powell made false statements during his testimony. On June 25, 2025, Powell testified under oath concerning the renovation of the Federal Reserve’s Eccles Building. Luna contends that he made misleading claims about the building’s amenities and the status of its maintenance.

Additionally, she criticized Powell for downplaying the cost escalations related to the project, which have skyrocketed from $1.9 billion to $2.5 billion. According to documents reviewed by congressional investigators, these cost overruns are more significant than Powell suggested.

She argues that the increased expenses are actually related to the need for simplified construction measures to avoid further delays.

Luna pointed to contradictions between Powell’s statements and the claims submitted to the Federal Reserve’s planning commission, noting that the revised plans included a VIP dining area, expensive marble finishes, modernized elevators, and more. Such details, she claims, Powell publicly denied.

As a consequence of these accusations, she announced plans to introduce charges against Powell. Perjury, she noted, can carry a prison sentence of up to five years, along with fines.

Powell has denied the perjury allegations and has initiated a formal investigation into the renovation of the Eccles Building. The Federal Reserve’s website also features a video tour of the renovation plans. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Federal Reserve for a response but has not yet received one.

Luna has stated previously that she expected President Trump to remove Powell, yet that has not occurred. Trump’s remarks have so far suggested he is unlikely to dismiss Powell, despite pressure from various factions within the party. Notably, some moderate Republicans argue that firing Powell could lead to greater instability in the markets.
