Reflecting on the AFC South’s Future
The Houston Texans currently stand as the dominant force in the AFC South, claiming the title last season. However, as they gear up for 2025, there’s lingering uncertainty regarding their offensive stability. On the flip side, the Jacksonville Jaguars may have the best chance to dethrone them, but it’s hard to predict their trajectory, especially given that their coaching staff is one of the youngest and just starting to gel. The Indianapolis Colts have been lurking at the doorstep for some time, but ongoing debates about their quarterback situation could derail their hopes before the season kicks off. And then there are the Titans, who remain… well, the Titans.
Whoever emerges from the AFC South will have faced significant challenges along the way—the competition will be fierce, no doubt. These teams are gearing up for what could be a breakthrough year in 2025.
Houston Texans: LB Henry To’oto’o
Next season, the Texans’ defense could very well lead the league. I think that a strong performance from To’oto’o, or LB Christian Harris, could be pivotal. He offers speed and coverage skills that are, frankly, hard to find in other linebackers on their roster. Last season, To’oto’o led the team in tackles and made several impactful plays in crucial moments. Sure, he’s on the smaller side, which means the Texans really need to focus on strengthening their defensive tackle position. But if they can keep him protected, his range could lead him to an outstanding season.
Indianapolis Colts: Edge Rait Ratu
Ratu is a technically skilled player and, I believe, he’s on the verge of breaking through. His rookie season in 2024 was somewhat quiet, finishing third on the team in terms of pressure with just four sacks. Still, a pressure rate of 10.9% suggests there’s potential waiting to be tapped. With new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo on board, who has worked with some star pass rushers, it seems promising. If Ratu can refine his technique and convert those pressures into sacks, he could really make an impact.
Jacksonville Jaguars: RB Tank Bigsby
If last season taught us anything, it’s that a dynamic running game can change the playbook dramatically, as seen with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They managed to finish 12th in the league by using dual backs like Bucky Irving and Ruchard White effectively together. I can see something similar happening in Jacksonville with Bigsby and RB Travis Etienne. Bigsby, with his solid build and exceptional balance, seems poised to excel as their offensive scheme shifts to incorporate more gap plays. The team has challenges ahead, but Bigsby could really help them shine.
Tennessee Titans: CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
I’ve become quite the fan of Jarvis Brownlee Jr. after reviewing his performance on video. The Titans’ cornerbacks may not be the biggest, but they certainly play with heart and tenacity. Brownlee Jr. has shown he’s willing to mix it up in both the run and pass defense, fighting hard through contested catches. Following a lackluster season for their secondary, they are hoping for stronger contributions, and I believe Brownlee Jr. is ready to step up as a key starter this year.
