Release of Files on MLK’s Assassination
In a move prompted by an executive order from President Donald Trump, Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, has announced the release of over 230,000 documents concerning the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK).
“The American public has been waiting for nearly six decades to understand the full extent of the federal investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” Gabbard stated. “Thanks to President Trump, we are committed to ensuring that transparency surrounding this tragic event is maintained.”
This release is part of Trump’s broader pledge to unveil previously classified documents related to the assassinations of both President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
The latest set of files delves into the FBI’s investigation regarding MLK’s assassination.
Some documents shed light on potential leads and include internal FBI communications about the status of the case, alongside information about James Earl Ray’s former cellmate.
There’s also evidence from Canadian law enforcement relating to Ray’s escape from the country immediately following MLK’s assassination.
Attorney General Pamela Bondy asserted, “The American people are entitled to answers regarding the aftermath of this terrible event involving one of our nation’s leading figures.” She expressed pride in collaborating with Gabbard and other officials as directed by President Trump for this significant release.
Meanwhile, King’s children, Bernice and Martin Luther King III, released a statement expressing mixed feelings about the documents’ release, as they had opposed it previously.
“We understand that the topic of our father’s assassination has intrigued the public for many years,” the statement noted. They urged for respect towards the ongoing grief of their family amidst such releases.
