Queen Mary 2 to Anchor at Historic Sail4th 250 Event

The only operational ocean liner in the world, Queen Mary 2, will have prime visibility during what is set to be the largest gathering of naval ships for the Peace Navy meeting in history.

This coming summer, millions are expected to join in the celebrations marking America’s 250th birthday at New York Harbor, and this iconic vessel will provide some of the best views right from the comfort of its decks.

The majestic Queen Mary 2, owned by Cunard, will accommodate guests with an impressive display of both tall ships and naval vessels, stationed between the George Washington Bridge and the Verrazzano Narrows. This spectacular showcase will be a central feature of the multi-day event called Sail4th 250, taking place from July 3rd to July 8th.

Chris O’Brien, president of Sail4th 250, described the scene as visually stunning, with the naval fleet forming an impressive backdrop. He mentioned, “Encircling the Queen will be the airline for the Naval Aircraft of the Anchor.”

According to O’Brien, participating tall ships from over 30 countries will join the festivities. Queen Mary 2 will have an incredible vantage point for viewing what’s being referred to as the Nautical Array.

The logistics of positioning the Queen Mary 2 at the harbor alongside the Navy and Coast Guard were crucial, with O’Brien calling it one of the “final pieces of the puzzle” during planning. “It’s a bit of a ballet,” he added, especially with the parade and subsequent docking activities.

This event not only focuses on maritime traditions; it will also feature cannon salutes, boat tours, and a flight show by the Blue Angels, along with the traditional Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display.

The Queen Mary 2 will be securely anchored with a 23-ton anchor south of Governor Island, offering guests views from traditional steamer chairs or one of its 14 passenger decks.

When it first launched in 2004, the Queen Mary 2 was celebrated as the largest, longest, widest, and tallest passenger ship ever built. It boasts towers that rise about 200 feet above the water—equivalent to a 23-story building. It can carry more than 2,600 passengers.

The ship retains a unique charm, featuring a whistle that can be heard up to ten miles away, a legacy of the original Queen Mary that sailed the North Atlantic from 1936 to 1967. Unlike cruise ships, it offers a different experience, blending the power of a seafaring vessel with onboard luxury, including four outdoor pools and the only floating planetarium at sea.

Cunard has a storied history in transatlantic travel, originating in the 1800s with its Royal Mail Service. It played a significant role in transporting immigrants to the United States through Ellis Island and was involved in major historical events, including the rescue of Titanic survivors by RMS Carpathia in 1912.

Tickets for the July 4th voyage are now available, featuring over 1,300 rooms. Prices start around $5,000, with premium suites priced higher, and the most luxurious duplex apartments available for over $50,000.

After the celebration, the voyage will continue on to Newport, Rhode Island, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, returning to New York on July 10th.

“Cunard Ships has been sailing into New York for 185 years, and we’re excited to be part of this memorable event for Sail4th 250,” said O’Brien. “Aboard Queen Mary 2, guests will experience an unmatched view of tall ship parades, fireworks, and the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.”
