NYC Subway Stabbing Injures Two
Authorities reported that two men were stabbed in the abdomen on a busy subway train in New York City Wednesday morning.
In a separate incident, a former high school track star and current religion teacher from San Francisco was attacked while on vacation in Italy earlier this month. Nicolas Peregrino, who works at Archbishop Riordan High School teaching religious studies and Spanish, was assaulted by three individuals on a train near Milan on July 15th.
Peregrino recounted how he noticed someone eyeing him suspiciously. “They looked away but kept turning back to glance at me,” he said. It was then that a man lunged at him, leading to a struggle.
Survival Against the Odds
“The attacker yanked a gold cross off my neck and escaped with my luggage as the train door opened,” he explained. Bleeding from the neck, he managed to reach the next platform, where he called out for help. “I was on the platform, screaming for my life,” he remembered.
Images shared on a GoFundMe page to assist with his recovery show him nursing injuries while receiving care from paramedics.
The attack left Peregrino with significant injuries, particularly to his neck. The assailant, described as a North African immigrant, stole several belongings, including his luggage, passport, and the gold cross.
A friend who initiated the GoFundMe campaign, Finn McCole, mentioned that Peregrino is now in good health at an Italian hospital. “He’s just thankful to be alive and leans on his faith,” McCole stated, adding that they hope to raise money for medical expenses and to replace stolen items.
Arrests Made
Four suspects from Morocco and Tunisia were apprehended at another train station shortly after the incident. Authorities suspect these individuals may have been involved in attempted robberies or other assaults.
A few days after the attack, Peregrino was discharged from the hospital. While he lost his belongings, his gratitude was evident. “From this day forward, my life is a miracle,” he remarked. “I was saved by a higher power.”
Peregrino had taught Italian and served as an athletics coach at Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island from 2017 to 2022. He was recognized as a standout athlete during his time there.
