DeSantis gives 5-word reply to Cuomo's joke about relocating to Florida

DeSantis Responds to Cuomo’s Joke About Moving to Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reacted to a lighthearted comment from New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo had joked that he might consider relocating to Florida if he loses to socialist Zoran Mamdani. This quip did not sit well with some, including DeSantis, who voiced his concerns on social media.

In a post on X, DeSantis warned, “Don’t make Florida a New York!” His comments came in the context of predicting a surge in property values in Palm Beach—a common sentiment among some Floridians. He suggested that if Mamdani wins the upcoming mayoral race, it could lead to an exodus of New Yorkers seeking sunny alternatives.

Cuomo’s joke during a private gathering stirred mixed responses, spotlighting some anxiety about the political landscape in New York City. Although it was meant to be humorous, the remark at a breakfast event hosted by businessman John Catsimatidis highlighted real concerns among attendees about Mamdani’s potential impact as a political figure.

Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, is slated to challenge him as an independent in the general election. His statement drawing laughter also raised eyebrows about the current direction of New York’s governance.

Rich Azzopardi, a senior adviser to Cuomo, commented that the former governor is committed to New York, criticizing what he sees as an alarming trend with Mamdani’s candidacy. Azzopardi emphasized the risks of electing someone they perceive as inexperienced.

Polls suggest Mamdani is currently leading, but not by a wide margin, indicating a competitive race. He is ahead of Cuomo by just a few points, with Mayor Eric Adams also in the mix. Those closely following the election note that the winner of the Democratic primary is generally thought to have a strong advantage going into the general election.
