Philip Rivers Retires After 17 NFL Seasons

Philip Rivers has officially announced his retirement from the NFL after an impressive 17-year career.

On Monday, the quarterback signed a one-day contract with the Chargers, the team he spent the majority of his career with. In a heartfelt video shared by the team, Rivers reflected on his time in the league.

“I’m Philip Rivers, I’m a quarterback, and I’m retired from the Chargers,” he stated.

Although Rivers last played for the Colts in 2020, he hadn’t formally declared his retirement until now.

“True gratitude is the first thing that comes to mind,” Rivers expressed. “There were plenty of highlights and memorable Sundays, but what I cherish the most are the everyday moments—like those days at Murphy Canyon on the practice field. You really miss those scenes.”

Rivers dedicated 16 of his 17 seasons to the Chargers, still known as the San Diego Chargers during much of his tenure.

“I remember running down that hill at Qualcomm Stadium, thinking, ‘Wow, this is a special day.’ It wasn’t just about aging; it was deeper than that,” he remarked, his voice filled with emotion.

Recognized as an eight-time Pro Bowler, Rivers consistently tossed over 20 touchdown passes for 15 consecutive years.

“I loved playing games in the yard, the thrill of competition. Looking back, there were moments where I’d just shake my head and think, ‘That was so much fun,'” he said, reminiscing.

Throughout his speech, Rivers recalled remarkable victories, such as the 2009 playoff win against the Chargers, and various games against teams like the Bengals, Broncos, and Chiefs.

He also shared touching memories with former teammates including Jeromy Clary, Marcus McNeill, Nick Hardwick, and Chris Deilman.

In closing, Rivers reflected on his gratitude for the 16 years he spent as the Chargers’ quarterback, stating, “I never took it for granted. I wore that Charger uniform with pride and continued to give my all every game.”
