Minnesota Senator Omar Fate, who identifies as a democratic socialist and is currently campaigning for mayor of Minneapolis, has launched a campaign office aimed at supporting the protests that followed George Floyd’s death. He has called for a prohibition on tear gas and rubber bullets, returned campaign contributions linked to one of the nation’s largest fraud schemes, and advocated for prayer accommodations for Muslim employees.
Previously serving as a community specialist in Minneapolis, Fate was involved in efforts to pressure Amazon to provide its East African Muslim workers with prayer breaks during their shifts. “Big companies can really exploit people, especially those who might not know their rights,” he remarked.
As the first Somali-American in the Minnesota Senate, Fate has expressed some skepticism about the term “progressive,” suggesting that it has become too broad and lost its original meaning. He prefers the label “democratic socialist” and has concerns about candidates who accept corporate funding. “It’s a simple yes or no—a clear stance,” he added.
During the unrest after George Floyd’s death in 2020, Fate’s South Minneapolis campaign office became a resource for demonstrators, offering food, water, and first aid as buildings burned nearby. “I had to hit pause on my campaign,” he noted, reflecting on how his office was directly affected, with nearby structures facing destruction.
In 2022, his campaign faced scrutiny when he accepted nearly $11,000 in donations linked to a significant nutritional fraud scandal. Names of several donors had appeared in an FBI search warrant, prompting Fate to return the money, insisting he was unaware of any wrongdoing until the allegations resurfaced.
One of the key figures in the fraud, Livan Yasin Alicha, was among those who contributed to Fate’s campaign. Alicha has since pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and money laundering after misreporting on a federal food aid fund that he exploited for personal gain. Despite warnings from prosecutors regarding his flight risk, Alicha was released, with several co-conspirators having fled the country.
Fate maintains that he had no involvement in the fraudulent activities connected to the donations and has publicly denounced the scheme. Nonetheless, in 2021, he expressed criticism regarding the state’s decision to cut funding for organizations like Feeding Our Future.
This isn’t Fate’s first brush with controversy; in 2022, some of his campaign volunteers were convicted for making false statements during an absentee ballot investigation. Nevertheless, he continues to gain support in progressive sectors, advocating for various policies including local income taxes for the wealthy, tuition-free college, and alternative emergency response units to replace traditional policing. Moreover, he has criticized President Biden over his administration’s stance on Israel and referred to opposing voices as “white supremacists,” particularly in discussions surrounding educational opportunities for undocumented immigrants.
