As the murder trial of James Craig, a Colorado dentist, progresses into its second week, a crucial witness took the stand. Nicole Harmon, a lifelong friend of the deceased, Angela Craig, described Angela as someone who “wasn’t a risk taker” and never spoke of wanting to end her life.
James Craig, 47, stands accused of first-degree murder for the March 2023 death of his wife Angela, aged 43. The cause of her death was identified as a lethal amount of cyanide paired with tetrahydrozoline.
Harmon recounted a particular day in March when Angela assisted her with checking blood sugar levels. Upon arriving, she found Angela in a curled-up position, not eating or able to stand. When Harmon texted James about Angela’s state, he seemed to trivialize it, attributing it to post-COVID symptoms and never mentioning poison.
“Angela never knew what was killing her,” Harmon stated. This was in reference to a troubling period leading up to Angela’s hospitalization, where she described how despite his wife’s severe illness, James did not express any concerns about her well-being.
During her testimony, Harmon shared insights from her long friendship with the couple, noting that James had previously admitted to plans of harming Angela back in 2019. She said he informed her and her husband of intentions to use a harmful substance, suggesting a troubling pattern of behavior.
Legal expert David Gelman noted that this admission from James could be used effectively by the prosecution as it implies a history of drugging Angela. He emphasized that such actions indicate premeditation, which the prosecution aims to prove in this case.
Harmon also mentioned that James had confided his struggles with “sexual addiction,” implying discontent within their marriage. Testimonies disclose an email exchange between Angela and James, where she expressed feelings of neglect during a difficult time.
Furthermore, investigators uncovered that prior to Angela’s hospitalization, there were suspicious online searches linked to James. These included inquiries about “undetectable poisons” and how to acquire them, as well as instructions on how to make such poisons.
Harmon’s testimony raised doubts about the dynamics of Angela and James’s marriage, highlighting that despite being close friends, Angela never divulged any issues she might have had with her husband. “She never told me. She didn’t want me to see her husband differently,” Harmon recounted, emphasizing the complexity of their relationship.
