Senator Nicole Mitchell to Resign After Conviction

Democratic Senator Nicole Mitchell from Minnesota is expected to resign by early August following her recent robbery conviction, according to her lawyer.

In a press release shared by Minnesota Public Radio, her attorney noted that she plans to finalize important legislative projects called “Project Top Extraordinary” before stepping down on August 4th. The announcement comes after Mitchell was found guilty of breaking into her stepmother’s home.

“Senator Mitchell deserves to hand over her legislative projects to her successor or finalize them before leaving office,” her lawyer stated in the release.

Police in Detroit Lakes arrested Mitchell in April 2024 after her estranged stepmother called 911 to report a break-in. Officers discovered Mitchell in her stepmother’s basement, dressed entirely in black and holding a flashlight wrapped in black socks.

In light of the verdict, fellow Democratic Senator Erin Murphy expressed that she hopes Mitchell will follow through on her pledge to resign upon conviction. There has been considerable pressure on Mitchell from her colleagues to step down following the judgment.

Mitchell, who is also a meteorologist and Air Force officer, was first elected to represent Minnesota Senate District 47 in 2022.

As of now, Mitchell’s office has not responded to requests for comments concerning her resignation.
