Eugenio Suarez’s Rising Market Value
Eugenio Suarez’s value on the trade market is heating up, much like his recent performance at the plate.
The Diamondbacks’ All-Star third baseman launched his fifth home run in just three games on Monday night, despite the team’s 6-3 loss to the Astros.
The Yankees have reportedly expressed interest in the 34-year-old, who is set to become a free agent at the season’s end, according to John Heyman of the Post. Other teams, including the Mariners and Cubs—both of whom Suarez played for in previous seasons—are also inquiring as the MLB trade deadline approaches next Thursday.
Suarez is leading the majors with 86 RBIs and has been quite the powerhouse lately, hitting two homers on Saturday and another pair on Sunday. Remarkably, he has recorded three multi-homer games within his last six outings.
In that same span, he has put up a 20-20 record with five walks and no strikeouts.
With the Yankees recently reshuffling their lineup—moving Jazz Chisholm to second base and parting ways with DJ LeMahieu—they have left a gap at third base. Rookie Jorvit Vivas, who’s struggling with a .173 batting average, and Oswald Peraza at .150, are sharing time at the position.
The Diamondbacks, currently sitting at 50-51, had just achieved their fourth consecutive win before Monday’s defeat. They aren’t entirely out of the postseason race, being only 5.5 games behind the third wildcard spot, although they would need to surpass four other teams amid challenging pitching circumstances.
Given Suarez’s performance, age, and contract situation, the Diamondbacks might find themselves needing to trade him by the deadline while he’s still a sought-after player.
Suarez mentioned that he feels “happy” in Phoenix but also entertained the thought of joining the Yankees during MLB’s All-Star Festival last week.
He acknowledged, “The Yankees are the Yankees, and I feel they’re the team that wants to win. To them, a [World Series] opportunity has been within reach since last year, but they’re still hungry.” He added, “If you go over there, like I said, I’ll do my best there. Try to help them win the World Series.”
The Yankees, now at 55-45 after a loss to the Blue Jays, are trailing the AL East by four games.
