Rainbow Armbands at Euro Cup Transform Soccer Tournament into Victim Olympics

Drama at the Women’s European Championships

This year’s Women’s European Championships seem a bit tense. Perhaps it’s not surprising, considering the competitive nature of soccer. It turns out that some players are feeling frustrated with one another due to differing commitments to displaying Pride Flags.

For some time now, there’s been a rift in the soccer community regarding the celebration of Pride. The European Football Association (UEFA) and FIFA have differing opinions on what kinds of Pride celebrations are acceptable.

During this year’s Euro Cup, teams are faced with a choice: wear rainbow flag armbands or opt for a more neutral option—a monocolored band that simply says “respect.” Not exactly an ideal situation, is it?

UEFA has stated it will provide standard yellow and blue armbands, though the rainbow versions are available upon request. This isn’t exactly a strong endorsement for players to prominently display Pride colors; instead, it seems they’re emphasizing the more generic option.

Offering rainbow gear is not mandatory for UEFA, unlike in some other sports organizations. Yet, giving players the choice to participate may be fostering more division than unity. This year, out of 16 teams in Euro 2025, nine have chosen to wear the rainbow armbands while the remaining seven, including the French team, decided against it, which could lead to backlash.

This situation might remind some of the classic Dr. Seuss story about the Sneetches, where one group discriminates against another based on superficial traits. The French team’s decision to wear a “respect” band instead of rainbow armbands reflects their perspective on handling criticism surrounding diversity within the team.

According to their captain, Gridge Mbok Battey, emphasizing one cause could overshadow other important issues. “There are so many causes to defend that we cannot focus on just one,” she explained, implying their team is simply too diverse to narrow it down to a single symbol.

This whole scenario illustrates a challenge: promoting diversity while striving for unity. If one group prefers one label—be it starberry or plainberry—what’s the actual significance? Perhaps it’s time to drop the armband debate and focus on playing the game.
