Michael Knowles faces de-banking due to an alleged 'legally binding order'

A significant payment processing platform has announced that it has halted payments to certain political commentators due to a “legally binding order.”

On Monday, Michael Knowles expressed frustration, alleging that Stripe, the payment service in question, had effectively “banned” him. He speculated that this action stemmed from his political views.

“Hello @Stripe. Are we still banking together? Was that me?” Knowles mentioned in a post. “If a man insists he can’t become a woman, donate to a life support charity; if two men disagree about purchasing eggs or borrowing a uterus, is that banking related?”

He pondered whether this suspension impacted his ability to engage in financial activities.

Knowles explained that payments from his monetized account on X had “suddenly stopped” about six months ago. Initially assuming it was just a mistake, he reached out to Stripe support for assistance.

Stripe’s support team confirmed, according to screenshots shared by Knowles, that they had communicated with X about this situation back in October.

It seems they advised X to reach out directly for more details. However, a support email noted, “We cannot provide further details about this account hold, so we suggest contacting us for more information.”

Knowles later asked X for help, but they redirected him to Stripe.

“We’ve confirmed that the issue is not on our end; you need to log in,” a member of the X team reportedly told him.

He concluded that the decision by Stripe to suspend his account was likely a retaliatory act due to his opinions.

“I haven’t engaged in illegal activities like distributing fake IDs or selling drugs, so it seems Stripe has determined that my political views somehow breach their policy against promoting ‘illicit violence’ towards certain demographics,” Knowles remarked. “Of course, I’ve never endorsed ‘illegal violence’ against anyone. However, without concrete explanations from Stripe, it seems they’ve decided that specific conservative opinions are becoming ‘illegal actions.’

Stripe responded to Knowles, asking him to connect with them directly to rectify the matter.

Later, Stripe followed up and provided further clarification about the payment pause. The response indicated that the restrictions imposed were not initiated solely by Stripe and stemmed from a legally binding order they received. Their support team had previously contacted X regarding this matter.

Knowles found the nature of these orders somewhat unclear but posted an update about the situation.

“I appreciate that Stripe is working to resolve this odd issue. It appears to have originated from a government management error rather than an intentional action,” he wrote. “While investigating, it’s reassuring to know we’re also looking into legislative solutions for the transparency issues that many Americans face.”

Stripe expressed gratitude for Knowles’s cooperation and reiterated their commitment to resolving the issue, emphasizing that their operations are not influenced by political statements.

Attempts to get further comments from X were met with silence.
