Deadly Massachusetts assisted-living center that resulted in 10 deaths connected to smoking

Officials believe that a fire on July 13 may have led to a tragic incident at a Massachusetts assisted living facility. This fire, which caused the destruction of the Gabriel House, resulted in the deaths of over ten individuals, including five firefighters, and left more than 30 others injured. During the investigation, it was speculated that the fire could have resulted from the careless handling of smoking materials or an issue with an oxygen machine.

S. John Dubin, a former state fire service representative, mentioned at a press conference that the fire originated from a resident’s room on the second floor. However, as authorities conducted their investigation and initial interviews, it became apparent that the fire seemed to have been started deliberately, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn. They found no signs that cooking or other appliances had played a role in the incident.

The only items identified in the room related to the fire were an oxygen concentrator and various smoking materials, which might have contributed to the situation. Tragically, one of the individuals in the room at the time lost their life due to the flames. There are two primary suspected causes: a mechanical failure involving the improper use or disposal of oxygen equipment or smoking materials. With these possibilities, the cause of the incident remains officially “undecided.”

Investigators suggested that medical oxygen likely facilitated the swift spread of the fire. Dubin noted, “Oxygen is a key element for fire, and it was present in the environment,” underscoring how fires burn more rapidly and fiercely in oxygen-rich settings. The dangers of using oxygen at home have been a persistent issue, contributing to numerous fatalities and injuries in Massachusetts over the past decade, particularly related to smoking materials.

Dubin also emphasized the risks associated with smoking in homes using medical oxygen, stating, “There’s no safe way to smoke, especially when oxygen is involved.” Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon commended the efforts of first responders and spoke to the ongoing impact on the victims and their families. He reflected on the devastating loss they have experienced since the incident.

“You just can’t fathom the sorrow they feel,” Bacon stated, noting how each firefighter worked tirelessly to save as many lives as possible amid incredibly challenging circumstances.

Bodycam footage showcased the bravery of Fall River police officers as they rushed to assist residents, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to public safety. The coordinated efforts of emergency services underscored their dedication to protecting their community during this crisis, as dozens of first responders worked together amidst the chaos.
