Major Trade Deal Announced Between US and Japan
In a recent announcement, President Donald Trump claimed to have secured a “historic deal” with Japan, stating that the US is set to gain “90% of its profits.”
On Tuesday, Trump revealed plans for Japan to invest $550 billion into the US economy, citing a “mutual” 15% tariff on exports. This investment is expected to foster a renewed trading relationship between the two nations.
According to Trump, Japan will also “open its own markets for trade,” which includes sectors like automobiles, rice, and various agricultural products. He emphasized that this agreement could lead to “hundreds of thousands of jobs” in the US economy.
Following this announcement, Japan’s chief trade negotiator, Ryosei Kazawa, expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the negotiation, declaring it a successful mission.
In a subsequent speech, Trump mentioned that the two nations also finalized an additional agreement concerning liquefied natural gas. He even hinted at potential future agreements with Europe, although he didn’t delve into specifics.
Earlier this month, Trump had issued a warning about imposing a 25% tariff on Japanese exports to the US starting August 1st, which is slightly above the 24% rate he proposed in April.
On the same day, he indicated that the Philippines would now face a 19% tariff following a completed trade deal with the US.
Trump stated, “It was a beautiful visit and we concluded our trade deal, which means the Philippines is open for trade with the US and Zero Tariffs. The Philippines pays 19%.” He also noted the strong military collaboration ahead, praising the Philippine leader as a “very respected” and tough negotiator.
The current administration has already reached trade agreements with the UK, China, and Vietnam, laying out plans for ongoing discussions with India. They aim to finalize even more before the August 1st deadline.
